First and foremost, let me start out with a resounding THANK YOU!! One, for creating a fitness program designed for all fitness levels, and two, for educating me on health, fitness, and diet as the cornerstone of any successful fitness program.
My name is Monique and I am a 36-year-old single mother of two children, ages 12 and 4. As a young child, I was known as the "skinny minnie" of the family. That all changed once I hit puberty. All of a sudden, my hips began to spread and my rear end took on the shape and size of so many other women in my familybig! I was no longer the little girl all my friends admired; I soon found myself ashamed of my size and weight. I envied all the other little girls for being so thin, and I longed to be just like them.
As I entered high school, I stayed physically active as a cheerleader and dancer. Even with so much physical activity, I continued to struggle with my weight and secretly despised the reflection I saw in the mirror. Food became my best friend and companion, a comfort that was always there when I needed consoling.
With the birth of my first child I gained a whopping 60 pounds, tipping the scale at 197 pounds. I had never been this heavy in my life, and I fell into a deep postpartum depression. I was able to lose 30 pounds, but it was an unhealthy process of nearly starving myself and working out seven days a week. As I began to eat normally again, I packed on the pounds at an even higher rate, which I now know was due to my starvation tactics. So I resigned myself to the fact that I would always be heavy, and I tried to live with the "bigger" me.
With my second pregnancy I put on an additional 50 pounds, and this time broke my record, reaching 205 pounds. I felt as though my life was spiraling out of control, dealing with my weight, two children, and a failed marriage. I carried around my 180-pound self on my 5' 3" frame for nearly three years after the birth of my second child. At this point my doctor cautioned that I had high blood pressure, my cholesterol was high, and I was overweight for my height. I knew I was overweight, but to hear my doctor say that I needed to lose weight was a reality check. I was embarrassed and ashamed. These health problems are very common in my family, and I didn't want to follow in the unhealthy footsteps of so many other women in my family.
But what was I to do? I tried going to the gym four to six times a week, but with running a home-based daycare and single-handedly caring for my own two children, I didn't have the time or the energy to run to the gym and drag my kids along. I tried the Atkins diet, Richard Simmons, The Firm tapes, Tae Bo, Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, Winsor Pilatesyou name it. If it was out there, I tried it. Nothing seemed to work and nothing held my interest and motivation long enough for me to see any kind of results. So I remained overweight, and I grew even more depressed.
All this changed early one morning as I was flipping through the channels and came across the Slim in 6 infomercial. I had never heard of Beachbody or any of their products, but I listened and watched with awe as real people talked about their success with the program. What caught my attention most was the many "before" and "after" profiles on the show. In particular I listened to Kimmah's story, as I could relate to her situation of being so large and struggling with an eating disorder. I thought to myself, these people are real and these results are real. However, I was still very skeptical, having tried so many products on the market and failed at all of them. I visited the Web site, which shed a whole new light on the program and on Beachbody products. I placed my order for Slim in 6 with a prayer and a hope!
As I waited for the program to arrive, I visited the Beachbody Message Boards and wow, what a phenomenon this community was! These people were so active, and their motivation was contagious! They made you want to succeed, which was exactly the motivation I needed. I began with Start It Up! and could get through those initial workouts with some effort. As I progressed to Ramp It Up! and Burn It Up!, I noticed an increase in my energy level and with each day, I was more excited to get to the workout. I continued with the program six days a week, with one day off as recommended, taking my ActiVit multivitamins and the Slimming Formula. I also made it a point to eat within the top two tiers of Michi's Ladder, allowing myself to eat from the third tier on occasion.
With the Slim in 6 program, I lost 17 pounds and over 25 inches! I was very satisfied with my results from Slim in 6, and after its completion, I felt the need to push my body even further to work on toning and muscle definition. Enter Power 90 and Tony Horton! I was overly excited to begin another Beachbody program, and Power 90 lived up to my expectations. Not only did I lose additional inches and weight, but I began to see muscle definition that I didn't know was genetically possible for me! Watching my body respond to the program and take on such a transformation was amazing, and my results pushed me even further to succeed.
To date, with Beachbody products I have lost over 30 pounds, I've shed 31 inches from my entire body, and my body fat has dropped from 30% to 13%. In addition, much to my surprise (and satisfaction!), I've gone from a size 14 to a sleek size 6! I'm still in shock that I'm able to slide into a size 6, which I couldn't fit into as a child, and I owe it all to Beachbody and their amazing workouts. When people notice and make comments like, "Wow, you look great!", "You are losing so much weight!", and "I want to look like you, what program are you on?", it makes all the difference in the world. I no longer walk around ashamed of my size and hiding behind my clothes. Now I walk with confidence and my head held high, with a new sense of self!
I am amazed at my body transformation, but more importantly, the Beachbody community has taught me the importance of healthy eating along with a fitness program. I am now able to control my eating habits and make more sensible, healthy food choices. The knowledge I have acquired from Beachbody is invaluable, and I will take it with me forever and share it with others. In fact, my mom is now doing Slim in 6, and my best friend is doing Power 90!
I have since started Power Half Hour and will begin P90X in a short time. Now I can truly live by my Beachbody signature: "Don't just make a temporary change, make a lifestyle change. We're in this together!"
Thank you, Beachbody family.
