2005 Hawaii Trip
Hi! I'm a 51-year-old wife and mother to an 11-year-old daughter. One cold winter night back in 2003 I saw the Power 90 infomercial, which has changed my life forever. Before Power 90 I had been feeling depressed about my health and life in general. My daughter was 9 at the time, and I still hadn't lost the weight I gained with my pregnancy. I just had no energy and my back and knees also bothered me quite a bit, which kept me from doing some of the things I wanted to do with my husband and daughter.
I think sometimes we need to be "hit over the head" before the truth really sinks in. I know this was the case with me. I had become so used to my weight that I really didn't think I was that fat and out of shape. My moment of truth came when my husband applied for long-term care health insurance to help protect the money we've saved for our family. We were accepted, but they wouldn't give me the best rate for one reasonmy weight. I'm a nurse, so I'm well aware of the risk factors of obesity. I just didn't see it as a threat to ME and my health. Having to pay extra for the insurance really made me mad. I was mad in general, but especially at myself for not realizing the truth and then doing something about it.
One night a month or two later, I got home from work about midnight and flipped on the TV. There was Tony Horton in the Power 90 show. Usually when I see infomercials, I just change the channel. That night was different. I was ready to make a change in my life, and Power 90 looked like just what I needed. I immediately picked up the phone and made the call.
When I started the program in 2003 I weighed 220.5 pounds. The program was very hard for me at first, but I was determined to make it work. In the beginning I even had to hit Pause during the warm-up because I felt so weak and out of breath. My legs and arms seemed to weigh a ton, but as I did Power 90, I gradually got stronger and in better shape. I carefully watched what I ate and followed Michi's Ladder. I regularly took ActiVit Multi-Vitamins, Total Health Women's Formula, and Performance Formula. To my delight, by the end of the 90 days I'd lost 44 pounds and 27.75 inches of fat!
I liked Power 90 so well that over the next year I purchased and completed other Beachbody programs. I heard about the development of P90X and wondered if someone over 50 could really complete such an intense program. I decided to give it a try, and became one of the original P90Xplorers. It WAS a tough program, but I surprised myself with how well I was doing. I was about a third of the way into P90X when I suffered an injury. That injury taught me to really listen to my body and modify moves when necessary. I carefully worked my way back into shape over the next six months and then restarted P90X in April 2005, immediately after going to Tony's Chicago Fitness Camp.
This time I had no trouble completing the program. I again focused on consistency, intensity, and clean eating. I'm proud to report that I lost an additional 27 pounds and 10 inches doing P90X. By completing Power 90 and P90X I lost a total of 71 pounds and 38 inches, including 13.75 inches off my waist. I'm still not quite where I'd like to be, but I'm getting close and will reach my goal soon.
Even more important than my appearance is my improved health and sense of well-being. I have lots of energy, and seldom have trouble with my back and knees anymore. I used to take medicine for elevated cholesterol, but I was able to stop when my reading dropped to 167. I have so much more confidence in myself now, and have rediscovered the excitement of trying new things.
I'd like to give a big thank-you to my family, all my fantastic Beachbody support buddies, Tony, and Beachbody. I am proof that an overweight, out-of-shape, middle-aged person can get in great shape with hard work, dedication, and the help of Beachbody's fantastic programs.
