From Nemesis to Genesis

We see so many amazing "before" and "after" pictures in the P90X® infomercial and Success Stories photo gallery. There are plenty of people who see their own "after" pictures and still can't believe the results. There are even more folks (who haven't done the program) who see those pictures and think they're doctored or completely fake.

Those of you who have taken the journey know better. But I don't care who you are; when you're in a bad way, it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It seems impossible to find a way to get from here to there. So one day you wake up and find yourself in a place that just doesn't work anymore. It's not like the day before was any different. It's just that today's the day when you say enough is enough.

As miserable as that day is, in retrospect, it turns out to be one of the best days of your entire life. You might find yourself in a state of flux that is so disheartening that you feel possessed by sadness, fear, and depression. The one great thing about rock bottom is that there's only one place to go. Transformation, catharsis, or metamorphosis only really comes from a deep, deep desire to change.

The people who've made dramatic strides with P90X are the ones who found themselves struggling with those dark places filled with their biggest fears, their personal nemeses. The push and pull of the situation is so great that the pendulum just has to swing far in the other direction.

This isn't the case for everyone, but I believe many folks who can't seem to stick with the program haven't yet found a good enough reason to do it. I'm not saying you have to be at the brink of disaster to reach your goals. What I am saying is that you must have a powerful reason for why you want to be in shape. Because if you don't, you'll find plenty of reasons to say P90X doesn't work.

There are just as many people who get in shape but can't sustain the momentum because they've failed to realize that the reason to stay in shape has changed. Change is constant. Old answers don't always work in new situations. I've been able to stay in shape for the last 19 years because I've kept listening to what my body (mind and heart) needed.

Your genesis or rebirth is NOT a one-time bolt of lightning but a constant and an evolving work in progress. The day you look your nemesis straight in the eye and say "today is the day" is day 1 of your genesis. The key to lifelong success is when you can keep your eye on the prize, even when the reasons change.
