Meet the Winners of the Team Beachbody Game®!

Team Beachbody Game®"It's so surreal," said Earl Broughfman. "I feel like I may wake up in the recliner where I saw my first Power 90® infomercial." But it's no dream. Broughfman, along with Kimberly Barnett, are now $250,000 richer thanks to their steadfast dedication to lifestyle transformation.

Last week at a lavish ceremony at The Grove in Anaheim, California, Barnett and Broughfman were the inaugural Grand Prize winners of the Team Beachbody Game® Awards Gala. The pair were picked out of a group of eight finalists who all received $50,000. It was the culmination of a year of MDB™ giveaways that have included daily and monthly winners. The Gala event also awarded Team Beachbody's most successful Coaches, which came at the end of a two-day Coach's Summit meeting. But the spotlight was on the Grand Prize winners, whose transformation stories have inspired hundreds of thousands of Team Beachbody™ community members.

"It is an indescribable feeling of accomplishment," adds Broughfman. "All of those people and I was voted the best transformation. I can't believe it. I still find myself looking through the stories and videos and wondering how I was the one chosen."

The transformations

"For years, I didn't know how to take a stand for myself," wrote Barnett in her Grand Prize transformation application. "It took my daughter pleading with me to quit smoking because she didn't want me to 'get a black heart and die'. As a single mother, this broke my heart because a seven-year-old shouldn't be worrying about her only parent dying; she should be playing with her dolls. So I quit smoking 4 days after her birthday. Unfortunately the solution to not smoking was to sit on the couch and eat my way through my withdrawals."

Barnett was able to keep from smoking but a year later she topped the scales at 208 pounds. Her health deteriorated to the point where she was put on medication for hypertension. She had a hard time moving around, became depressed, and couldn't sleep.

"I did everything I could to pretend it wasn't happening," she said. "Reality hit me hard the night I had to read off a number located on my broken clothes dryer for customer service. I couldn't get to it because I had to maneuver in a way that wasn't possible because of my weight. I hung up with them, devastated and embarrassed, and sat there on the floor for hours crying . . . what happened to me???"

Three years of failed fad diets later, she stumbled upon a Turbo Jam® commercial. "Looking back now that's what saved [not being able to sleep] me; because I was up late flipping channels, I stopped flipping long enough to see the infomercial for Turbo Jam, and it got my attention FAST!!! I bought it, pushed play, and the pounds came off! It was FUN, and I worked 58 pounds off in less than a year!!

"Through Team Beachbody and the guidance of my coach, Doug Couch, I have learned proper nutrition again and have now lost 82 pounds! I always try to eat a clean diet with one "cheat day" each week. I also began taking Beachbody Slimming Formula, ActiVit®, and Joint Formula which have helped me achieve even faster results! Better yet, my doctor declared me to be hypertension free and I'm completely off of meds! I've inspired her so much that she's asked me to speak at her public health seminars; which is so rewarding and exciting for me."

Broughfman had struggled with obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, sleep apnea, and feet that were breaking down, making it harder for him to get out of the hole he'd dug into.

"Life has a way of hitting you hard and waking you up to reality," the railroad engineer of Covington, VA, recounts in his transformation story. "I remember a day at a park a year before I started my new life, I went to the test seat of a thriller roller coaster and it seemed fine. Then, after waiting for over an hour I was asked to exit the ride because the restraints wouldn't fit. That was so embarrassing; it made me feel like every eye in the park was on me."

Since that night on the recliner, Broughfman has lost over 49 inches and 140 pounds. He's graduated from Power 90 to Power 90 Master Series to P90X®. "I have been fortunate to have a life partner, my wife and soul mate, Suzie, who has stood beside me as my cheerleader, chef, and confidant," he states. "She has given me emotional and inspirational strength during tough times and reassured me that I can do anything, if I set my mind to it. My Coach Elizabeth Dedek has been an encouragement to me, always having a good word of motivation and taking time out even when traveling to call me to keep me moving along with my program.

"I've overcome my major obstacle, which was overeating. By using the 40/30/30 Balanced Slim Down Plan, I'm feeling the best I ever have in my life. It feels great to go into a store and be able to buy "normal" clothes, not off the "big and tall" rack like I had done for so many years! It's amazing to me when I look at my "before" and "after" photos taken in my kitchen and realize, there IS a DOOR there!"

Both winners have become Coaches and say that helping others change their lives is highly rewarding.

"I am so honored to be one of the first MDB Grand Prize Winners!" says Barnett. "It gives me yet another opportunity to put my success story out there even more to help other people realize that their own success story can come true. I struggled for years to get fit and healthy and I finally found the tools in Beachbody. I see so many people struggling like I did and I am so excited to be able to bring to them the tools to help them succeed. I love seeing their transformations and especially seeing their smiles. What a gift to be a part of so many wonderful people's lives!"

"My greatest joy is now having credibility," adds Broughfman. "I may be able to change some lives now because people will take me seriously when I give them advice with their programs. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am grateful that the judges and all the people of the Team Beachbody community voted and showed their confidence in me."

Barnett seemed to sum up everyone's feelings on the first annual event and what the future holds by stating emphatically, "I love this stuff!!!"

5 Ways to Bring Back Breakfast

Big BreakfastOdds are that future generations will only hear stories about the times when the word "breakfast" didn't have "on the go" tacked to the end of it. As life gets faster and as our priorities become increasingly warped, the morning meal is quickly falling by the wayside, in favor of a foil-wrapped, junky sugar bar in the car on the way to work.

It's tragic, really, given how important breakfast is. Obviously, you don't eat when you sleep, so what you're doing in the morning is genuinely "breaking a fast." You're restoring depleted nutrients and getting blood sugar back to livable levels. Doing this with "fake food," as author Michael Pollan refers to it in his book, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto, just doesn't work.

Processing depletes food of nutrients. True, the food industry tries to "fortify" those nutrients back in, but it just doesn't work. Referring to a 2003 study from the University of Minnesota, Pollan points out, "Food science can add back only a small handful of nutrients . . . As the whole-grain food synergy study suggests, science doesn't know nearly enough to compensate for everything that processing does to whole foods."

"But, but, but," you mutter, "I'm busy!" Well that's not good enough! No sir! The morning meal matters, so I'm going to help you reclaim it in two simple ways. First, I'm going to suggest five extremely simple breakfasts that'll take you no more than 10 minutes to prepare and consume. Then I'm going to show you how to find that 10 minutes.

Part One: Five Simple Breakfasts

CerealBowl of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk

For all you sweet teeth, I'll do this one with Kashi GoLean Crunch. There are "better" cereals out there, but this one has a nice balance of nutrition and yumminess. If the nutrition label reads between 20 grams (g) and 40 g total carbs and between 5 g and 10 g total fiber, you're in good shape.

One cup Kashi GoLean Crunch
Half cup 1% milk

Calories: 241 Fat: 4 g Saturated Fat: 1 g
Carbs: 43 g Fiber: 8 g Protein: 13 g

Fruit and YogurtFresh fruit and plain, low-fat yogurt

If your yogurt comes with added fruit, it probably also comes with added sugars or added artificial sweeteners. You're much better off chopping up your own fruit. If you just can't cope with the taste of real yogurt, add a teaspoon of honey.

One cup plain, low-fat yogurt
Six strawberries

Calories: 176 Fat: 4 g Saturated Fat: 2 g
Carbs: 22 g Fiber: 2 g Protein: 13 g

Cottage Cheese and BananaFresh fruit and low-fat cottage cheese

If you still can't deal with the taste of yogurt, try this one. Cottage cheese is the unsung hero of the protein world. It's loaded.

One cup plain, low-fat cottage cheese
One banana

Calories: 271 Fat: 3 g Saturated Fat: 2 g
Carbs: 34 g Fiber: 3 g Protein: 29 g

Fruit with Peanut ButterWhole-grain or wheat toast, peanut butter, and fresh fruit

It's easy to eat toast and an apple in a car. This is as on-the-go as you can get.

One piece of whole-grain toast
One tablespoon natural peanut butter
One apple

Calories: 257 Fat: 10 g Saturated Fat: 2 g
Carbs: 39 g Fiber: 7 g Protein: 7 g

Eggs and ToastScrambled egg on toast

It's like your own, personal "Egg McMuffin." Scramble one whole egg and one egg white. Microwave them for one minute. Stir them up. Microwave them for another minute. Cooking time may vary depending on your microwave.

One whole egg and one egg white
Half tablespoon vegetable oil-based spread
One piece of whole-grain toast

Calories: 197 Fat: 9 g Saturated Fat: 2 g
Carbs: 16 g Fiber: 2 g Protein: 13 g

Part Two: Finding the Time

Still can't find the 10 minutes to enjoy a decent breakfast? Behold the miracle of time management:

  • Watch 10 minutes less television the night before. Go to bed 10 minutes sooner. Wake up ten minutes earlier. Ta dah!

  • Save 5 minutes by laying out your clothes the night before. Save 5 more minutes by taking a shorter shower. Ta dah!

The point is, it's just 10 minutes. If you can find 30 to 90 minutes to workout, you can find another 10 to give your body the fuel it needs to get through the day, so take back your mornings, brothers and sisters! Peace out!

Test Your Breakfast IQ!

  1. YolkWhich breakfast item is one of the only foods that contains vitamin D? The egg, its yolk in particular, is one of the few food sources with naturally occurring vitamin D. In fact, the egg also is one of the best proteins for humans, containing nearly all the essential amino acids. Did you know a hen rotates the egg 50 times or more a day so the yolk won't stick to the side?

  2. How many pounds of bacon are produced in the U.S. each year? Two billion pounds of bacon are produced each year. That's almost seven pounds for every man, woman, and child. In the U.S., bacon is made from the belly of the pig. In Canada it comes from the pork loin, and in Europe, bacon is made from the thigh or shoulder.

  3. GritsWhat are grits and groats? Grits, or hominy grits, are kernels of corn that have been soaked in an alkaline solution, which improves the flavor and texture of the kernel. It also makes it easier to grind. The flour used in corn products like tortillas and chips usually are ground from hominy grits. Groats are the kernel of the oat grain with the hull removed. Groats are much chewier than rolled oats and require longer soaking to make them more edible. Irish steel-cut oats are chopped groats. They are chewier than regular oatmeal but cook faster than whole groats.

  4. How many pounds of milk does it take to make one pound of yogurt? One pound. It's made by adding bacteria to ferment the milk, without affecting the volume. Americans put away about 300,000 tons of yogurt each year.

  5. Peanut ButterHow many peanuts are in a 12-ounces jar of peanut butter? 550 peanuts are ground into one 12-ounces jar of creamy peanut butter. Peanut butter is largely consumed only in America. Only in the latter part of the 20th century has peanut butter caught on overseas, but it is still considered a specialty item abroad. It is believed to have initially been developed by a doctor for a patient with bad teeth.
