Our Top Five Health Headlines
A quick perusal of recent health and fitness headlines we felt
you'd find interesting

Compiled by Denis Faye

1.

Did we say "carbs are bad?" We meant "carbs are rad!"

According to Reuters news service, the folk at Atkins are doing a 180 on their approach to carbohydrates. As the low-carb fad sinks into the swamp of marginality where it belongs, Atkins is revamping their whole approach to dieting, taking more of a glycemic index approach, which is more about managing carbs rather than avoiding them.

What a novel approach!

2.   But what about nougat? That's good for you, right?

Putting another nail in the coffin of the "chocolate is good for you" theory, The Boston Globe talks to a whole bunch of very informed people who just pound away at the absurd notion that chocolate is something you should eat for good health.

Sorry, kids. Read it and weep.

3.   Trust your gut.

Johns Hopkins scientists recently released a study that indicates waistline measures are a far more accurate indicator of the potentiality of diabetes than Body Mass Index. BMI, a somewhat flawed mathematical measure of body fat that would list Arnold Schwarzenegger as "obese," just didn't hold a candle to the good old-fashioned measuring tape.

MSNBC News reports. Check it out.

4.   Then how has Santa Claus held on so long?

For decades, the trend has been that each generation lives longer than the one before it. Now, thanks to our obesity epidemic, America's putting the kibosh on long livin'. According to The Washington Post, reporting on an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, illnesses caused by obesity are shaving four to nine months off the average American's life. That's more than car accidents, homicides, and suicides combined!

So tell Gramps to put down the corndog and read this article.

5.   This doesn't mean our fitness advisors can help with math homework.

A recent study from the University of Chicago reported that keeping active, both mentally and physically, can help ward off Alzheimer's disease. While there have been similar reports, this one, in Medical News Today, goes much further in showing the importance of keeping both your mind and body active.

But if you hurt yourself trying to do trigonometry and Slim in 6® at the same time, we're not responsible. Have a read.

A Power 90® Note
By Carl Daikeler, Beachbody CEO

I walked into the office at around 7 AM the other day and heard Stephanie in Customer Service speaking with a new Power 90 customer. It was clear the customer wanted assurance that Power 90 would work. She had been doing it for a week, and while she could basically do most of the exercises, they weren't "easy."

I couldn't walk by. I had to stay and listen to how that call played out. I told Stephanie that it was critical she help the customer understand that the key to the program is doing it. Not for a week. Not for a month. Not even for 89 days . . . but for 90 days. The reason so many of us (me, included) have not succeeded at the stuff we've tried in the past was our lack of consistency and confidence in the results. That's why every Beachbody product has a money-back guarantee—so you can have the confidence that every time you get a shipment, as long as you DO the program as it was intended, with consistency, you will either see the results or you can send it back for a refund.

Stephanie was great on the phone. She told the customer that, of course, if she wanted her money back we would certainly accommodate her, but if her goal was still to lose the weight and get into shape, well, the CEO was standing in front of her assuring her that this program works!

She continued: "Just look at his photos in the guidebook. Power 90 worked for him—and that was before all the support tools were added to the Web site. Carl's standing here telling me he doesn't like working out either, that he understands the first week can be the hardest, but if you want to see the results, you owe it to yourself to see this through. The secret is not in buying the product—it's in doing it!"

Stephanie was right on. I am not even close to being a workout junkie. In fact I have been amazed to see some of our most hardcore customers run right by me with enthusiasm for fitness. I still need motivation. I still need to work at it. And that little exchange at 7 AM got me fired up. So I threw on the sneakers, logged into WOWY, and got my workout on.

None of us are above that simplicity—the act of feeling motivated enough when it comes to a choice as to whether to Push Play or not. You either do it or you don't. Results follow your choice.

And my point here is, if you made the choice to see what you could achieve in 90 days, don't look back—you need to live up to the commitment you made to yourself! The money will not be a factor—you have a money-back guarantee. The point is, if you're having second thoughts, as we all do, it's time to get real with this commitment: Pull out the DVDs, Push Play, and let Power 90 do its thing.

You saw the infomercial. You raised your hand. You said, "I want to succeed too!" And it's your turn. Give yourself a chance. Push Play! The program works for everyone who works the program.

Tip of the Week: Avoiding Shin Splints
By Steve Edwards

As a runner, walker, or hiker, shin splints are a common problem. To avoid them, make sure to stretch and exercise your anterior tibialis muscle that runs up the front of your leg (you know, your shin). Practice these two movements three to five times per week:

      1. Stand with your back against a wall with your feet about a foot from the wall. Legs straight. Now raise your toes. Do between 30 and 50 reps or go till failure.
      2. Stretch your AT muscle by squatting in front of a rail that you are grasping and leaning back until you feel the stretch down the front of your leg.

If you start to get shin splints, immediately finish each workout with a thorough icing and back off any bouncing until the pain goes away.

CEO's Mom Writes Great Book on Interior Design
By Carl Daikeler, Beachbody CEO

Denny Daikeler
I grew up in a house outside of Philadelphia where the furniture never stayed in one place long. My mother, an interior designer and now a writer on the subject, was always trying new things out: new colors, new arrangements, and new places to hold your keys (which could get tricky, if the spot changed when your keys were relocated without your knowledge).

But what I learned in those days was that as your life changes, so should your home design to suit your needs. And as I have moved from house to house, office to office, I've been lucky enough to learn some very simple exercises to make the design process that much simpler. Finally, those tips and exercises are available to the world . . . Mom wrote them down in a book, available now wherever great books written by CEO's mothers are sold.

I'm so proud of my mom, Denny Daikeler. She's an accomplished interior designer, and the book, What Color Is Your Slipcover?, looks like it will be a hit! She has been working on this book since I can remember. The title is a play on the popular book What Color Is Your Parachute? But instead of helping you figure out what career suits you, her book shows you how to figure out what interior design choices best suit you and your family so you enjoy your home more—without spending a lot of money to do it.

That's my mom's specialty, helping people decorate their home so that it expresses their personality, suits their lifestyle, and nourishes them—on a budget.

Too many people design the interior of their home based on what they see in magazines, what they think will impress others, or what an interior decorator recommends. As a result, they wind up with rooms designed to someone else's tastes. Might as well let them live there then.

But in her book, Denny shows you how to design so your home so it's perfectly suited to who you are and what you love.

Using a remarkable series of exercises she developed working with clients and her design students, Denny helps you:

  • Discover your own "inner design" and clearly reveal your personal style preferences.
  • Make color, furniture, arrangement, and fabric choices that suit you and your family.
  • Understand how a carefully thought-out living space can heal you emotionally and physically.
  • Learn about the support that environment can give to relationships, work, and play.

Before you hire an interior designer, this book will show you how you can better communicate your preferences so you get the most for your money, or better yet, make decisions on your own without external input or the extra expense of consulting a designer.

So check out Denny Daikeler's What Color Is Your Slipcover? and get the tools to design your home in a way that will work for you.
